QR Code Not Scanning? 8 Ways to Fix It

Find out why a QR code is not scanning and how to fix common problems with size, contrast, quiet zones, blur, glare, logos, damage, and broken links.

When a QR code will not scan, start with the physical code before blaming the phone. Size, clear space, contrast, image quality, glare, and styling are common causes.

1. Make the QR large enough

A code that is easy to scan up close may fail when the viewing distance increases. If the symbol is being used on a poster, window, sign, or other large surface, test it from the distance at which people will actually scan it.

2. Restore the quiet zone

Keep clear space around all four sides of the QR. Text, borders, photographs, and other graphics should not touch or visually crowd the symbol.

3. Increase contrast

Use a clearly separated foreground and background. Decorative colors that look different to the eye can still be difficult for a camera to distinguish, especially in poor lighting.

4. Check the exported image

Soft or heavily compressed modules can make decoding harder. Avoid taking a small raster image and enlarging it repeatedly. For flexible print layouts, an SVG export can preserve crisp edges.

5. Watch for glare and surface problems

Glossy lamination, glass, reflections, wrinkles, folds, and curved surfaces can interfere with the camera view. Change the angle, reduce reflections, or test a different placement.

6. Reduce logo coverage and decoration

A logo or custom pattern can obscure useful QR modules. Start with a simple code that scans reliably, then introduce styling gradually. Test the final export again after every significant design change.

7. Make sure the QR actually contains usable data

If the camera recognises the symbol but the result is empty or unexpected, inspect the decoded value. A malformed URL, incorrect phone number, or wrong network details can make a perfectly readable QR effectively useless.

8. Check the destination

When a QR scans but the page does not load, the problem may be the destination rather than the QR itself. Open the encoded URL directly and confirm that it still works without a login or temporary session.

Fast diagnostic order
  1. Try another phone or camera.
  2. Check size and viewing distance.
  3. Clear the quiet zone.
  4. Increase contrast.
  5. Replace a blurry or compressed image.
  6. Remove or reduce a logo.
  7. Inspect the decoded value.
  8. Test the destination itself.

Test the QR as a real user would

For a file on your computer, use the QR Code Reader. For a physical code, use the QR Code Scanner. Both help you confirm what the symbol actually contains before you change the design again.

When the problem is a newly generated code, return to the QR Code Generator, simplify the styling, and retest the exported version.
